Fitting everything you need into the smallest of en-suites.

• posted by Vicki K on Friday, 8 January 2010 12:06

It is a popular misconception that you need a large area to create a spacious en-suite, this is simply not true. With a few carefully chosen pieces and the right decor you can create a beautiful en-suite in a tight space.

The decor of a small en-suite should be kept bright and neutral. Flooring should be consistent throughout the room (consider the use of a wetroom flooring kit). Try and incorporate reflective surfaces within your en-suite as they increase the sense of light and space. Bathroom mirrors are especially important within a small en-suite, try using a mirror with LED lights fitted into it to maximise the light within your space. Use only clear glass as frosted or coloured glass can limit the distribution of light and make the space feel smaller.

If your en-suite is an internal room with no windows, consider the use of glass bricks to bring light through from other rooms or have a sky light installed. If neither of the previous suggestions are suitable for you, then ensure you have high quality bathroom lighting. Also consider an extractor fan to keep things fresh in your en-suite.

When choosing your bathroom fittings make sure you keep things compact. Smooth lines and bright whites will preserve the sense of space you are trying to create.

Your en-suite may only be large enough to house a toilet and hand basin, when choosing your toilet consider one specifically designed to be compact, look out for ‘short projectiontoilets, as these units take up the minimum space. Additionally, why not consider a back to wall toilet or wall hung toilet? These styles of toilets have a more minimalist appearance and take up less space than a traditional design as they are used with concealed cisterns which can be fitted in to your en-suite wall, preserving valuable space.

When choosing a basin consider a wall hung basin, corner basin or even a standard basin with a semi pedestal, all these options create a sense of space. They also have a minimalist appearance created by the lack of pedestal, which additionally provides extra floor space.

If your en-suite is slightly larger you may be able to incorporate a showering area, consider a small walkin enclosure or wet room panel as this will keep your en-suite open and light. A small quadrant enclosure or pivot door and side panel would also be an option. Remember to keep the glass clear to enable light to flood your en-suite.

When putting the finishing touches to your en-suite keep accessories to a minimum and try to keep the area uncluttered as a minimalist finish will preserve the sense of space you have worked so hard to create.
