Over the past couple of weeks we’ve enjoyed reading through loads of great blog posts that have provided frugal tips for the home. After spending a while whittling down our favourites, we’ve compiled seven handy tips for being frugal in the bathroom. Enjoy!

A guide to being frugal in the bathroom

1. Storage

The first tip in our mini-guide comes from the folks over at Gadling.com and shows how you can use a shoe organiser over the back of your bathroom door to store all of your bathroom essentials. This is the perfect solution for cosmetics, toothbrushes, and even toilet roll!

2. Cleaning

Our next favourite tip comes from Esther at Coupon Cutting Mom, and shows how you can create a homemade cleaning solution for your bathroom. Simply start with 12 ounces (340ml) of white vinegar, and the same amount of liquid detergent. First heat the vinegar in the microwave until hot, and pour into a bottle. Mix with the liquid detergent, and shake. A perfect way to get rid of that nasty buildup in the bathroom.

3. Functional

Next up is an innovative towel hanger from Ki Nassauer. She combines a couple of old wooden coat hangers with a simple dowel hanging, which provides a perfect way to hang up a couple of towels in the bathroom.

4. Decorating

To brighten up your bathroom on a budget, Sue at No Bad Days introduced a colourful shower curtain in their family bathroom. Along with a couple of other bits and pieces for under 50 dollars, the results were fantastic, and a great way to add colour to your bathroom without breaking the bank!

5. Accessories

If you’re looking for a few simple ways to accessorise your bathroom, then ‘Tightwad Mom’ may have just the trick. To hold all of the things that build up around your sink (toothbrushes, etc), she used a couple of old ceramic mugs from a dinnerware set that resulted in a perfect solution.

6. Cosmetics

A lot of people know about the “mix water with hand wash” trick to save a few pounds, but did you know you can get completely free shampoo? Heather at Fake-it-Frugal provided a great couple of tips. Firstly, make the most of free samples! Lots of companies happily give away cosmetic samples (including shampoo), and these are completely free (check out Money Saving Expert for details). Heather takes things a little further though, and recommends combining all of the free samples into one, adding a little water, and having a completely free shampoo!

7. Utilities

Finally there is a tip that is very close to our hearts. By turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, you can save a whopping 6 litres of water per minute. Combine that with the amount of people in your family, and you could be making a substantial saving on both money and water. With World Water Day coming up next month, it’s a good time to be a little water conscious.

As well as producing the mini-guide in gif format at the top of this page, we’ve also uploaded everything into a handy Pinterest board. Feel free to get in touch with us via either Twitter or Facebook to let us know your own favourite frugal tips for the bathroom!
