A bathroom is arguably one of the most important rooms of a home in terms of decor and design. Because of the very nature of its existence as room for cleansing, replenishing and stripping back the metaphysical layers of stress and anxiety that the each day creates for us, our bathroom being an environment that we feel happy and comfortable in is almost imperative to modern living. This is the room where most people commonly want to feel totally at ease with themselves and their surroundings, but this doesn’t mean that sticking to simple colour pallets or culturally ambiguous decor is a necessity either.

This is the room where most people commonly want to feel totally at ease with themselves and their surroundings, but this doesn’t mean that sticking to simple colour pallets or culturally ambiguous decor is a necessity either.

One design theme which has been recently gaining popularity as a chic, yet calming and tranquil cultural style is one based around Thailand. Eastern themes of colour and minimalism within the design front have been a well established choice for a considerable length of time, generally made popular by Japanese designs which are based around minimalism. But with the less obvious and slightly more inspired theme built around Thai culture, there are far more options for a differing colour pallet than there are with a lot of other eastern styles of decor.

A lot of influences for this style can be found within the spiritual and religious themes of Thailand, and also within other elements of its profoundly beautiful culture. For example the colour schemes which are used by, and associated with Buddhism and specifically Buddhist temples and monks are especially stunning. The range of light, yet bold oranges which are used to dye Buddhist robes can provide a perfect colour to use on one bold wall of a contrasting bathroom. Alternatively there are even lighter sides to the colour schemes which are reminiscent of this wonderful culture. A light and glowing green is very much reminiscent of Thai food and flora, and has a wonderfully calming effect on any room to which it is applied, especially in smaller bathrooms.

In fact Thailand’s culture is very much centred and focused around colours and shades. Every day of their week has a specific shade, and those born on a specific day have one specific shade as a lucky colour for the rest of their life. For example those who are born on a Thursday have a lucky colour which is remarkably similar to the previously mentioned shade of orange, which Buddhist monks use to dye their robes. Saturday has a regal shade of purple as its lucky colour. Monday is owned by a soft and warming shade of yellow, Tuesday is blessed by a shade of Cherry Blossom Pink and Wednesday is associated with the same calming green which I also previously mentioned. In fact not just every day but even some Thai evenings have their own specific colours, not only this but personalities are ascribed to each one in a method not dissimilar to our idea of “Astrology.”

Redecorating your bathroom in the theme of Thai culture is certainly not a quick fix, but with the right research into the colours and their meanings you will find that the pallet you create is the most personalised set of colours you’ve ever used. With the right application your bathroom can have that ultimate sense of tranquillity and relaxation that just cannot be achieved with western colour codes.
