How to Unblock your Toilet with Household Items

How to Unblock your Toilet with Household Items - Repairs

Bring a large pan full of water to boiling point and pour it into the bowl (taking care not to splash yourself). The increase in temperature should cause the material to break up a little and begin to loosen; repeating this process will eventually cause enough loosening to completely remove the blockage, but if not, combine the boiling water with one of the above ingredients for a more effective cocktail that should finish the blockage off!

A slow draining toilet can cause a whole host of problems in the bathroom. Firstly, you can’t flush the toilet without fear of it overflowing and damaging the surrounding area and furnishings; secondly a slow draining toilet means you have to wait a long time between flushes, not ideal for large families or shared accommodation!

Once again the Bathshop321 Handyman is on hand to help you fix another bathroom blunder one step at a time, and you’ll be pleased to know there are a few are household ingredients you can use to unblock slow draining toilets!

Yeast

Most of the time, a slow draining toilet is due to biodegradable materials stuck to the sides of the pipes. Yeast is an active, live ingredient that will eat away at those materials, loosening the blockage and allowing you to eventually remove it with a few flushes.

Be sure to check the expiration date to make sure the yeast hasn’t gone bad, then simply pour half a standard pot into the bowl and flush. You will likely have to repeat this a few more times before the clog will disappear.

Washing up Liquid

The grease fighting properties in washing up liquid can help loosen and remove the biodegradable materials from the inside of your toilet pipes. To be safe, use half a bottle to make sure enough of the detergent is in the pipes to work its magic; again, repeat this at least twice to see noticeable results.

Boiling Water

Bring a large pan full of water to boiling point and pour it into the bowl (taking care not to splash yourself). The increase in temperature should cause the material to break up a little and begin to loosen; repeating this process will eventually cause enough loosening to completely remove the blockage, but if not, combine the boiling water with one of the above ingredients for a more effective cocktail that should finish the blockage off!

There we have it; simple household ingredients that can save you a fortune on plumbing services and fix a blockage in just a few flushes! All in a day’s work for the Bathshop321 Handyman!
