A Guide To Bathroom Heating

Winter is fast approaching and with it comes the great need for heating in our homes. Bathrooms are one of the oddest rooms in our homes: the humidity, smallness and average time spent in there makes it somewhat difficult to regulate temperature all year round, unlike in other rooms. Thankfully there are a number of bathroom heating options you can opt for to make sure you’re getting the most efficient, cost-effective and good looking solution for your home.

Different Types Of Bathroom Heating

  • Radiators: The most traditional form of heating our homes, radiators run off your central heating to heat up water to steam and emit heat through the unit. Most radiators are fixed to the wall but floorstanding, although many allow you to just hang them off the wall. We find that traditional styled radiators look absolutely great in character properties such as cottages, as the elegant, old-school designs can transport you back to a bygone era.
  • Heated Towel Rails: The advantage of a towel rail compared to a radiator is that they have a shorter projection, so don’t intrude too much on the overall design of the room. The huge amount of models available means that you can really make a bold statement by using a heated towel rail as a focal design point of your bathroom.
  • Underfloor Heating: This is arguably the most effective form of heating a room these days, as the heat is emitted from every area of the bathroom rather than just from one fixed point as you would find with a radiator or heated towel rail. Who wants to step out of the bath or shower onto cold, hard tiles when you can keep your feet warm and toasty instead? Sounds perfect right?

Important Things To Consider Before Making Your Choice

The Size Of Your Bathroom

The size of your bathroom is very important to consider when deciding your heating options. In smaller bathrooms you may find that heated towel rails are the better option, due to the fact that they don’t project too far out from the wall; therefore leaving more space to move about in. In contrast, traditional radiators suit bigger bathrooms as they fill the extra space and can make a bold statement. If you’re looking for true minimalism, underfloor heating is the ultimate solution for small bathrooms as it doesn’t take up any extra room whatsoever!

The Layout Of Your Bathroom

If you have chosen to heat your bathroom with a traditional radiator or heated towel rail, it is very important to think about where it is going to be placed. Which fixed position will be able to project heat the furthest? Is the heat going to be blocked by existing bathroom furniture sitting in front of it, such as a basin unit? Traditionally radiators have been fitted in the coldest part of the room, usually underneath windows, in order to reduce the heat escaping. In the days of double glazing however this problem has been largely eliminated so we now have the freedom to choose where we place our radiators based on how the room looks, which is fantastic!

Electrical vs Central Heating

Depending on the make and model that you choose, heated towel rails can run off your central heating system or through plugging it into your electricity mains. Bear in mind that if you choose a towel rail that runs off your central heating, this means that you will need to close off every radiator valve in your home apart from the towel rail and turn the central heating on if you wish to use it during summer. Alternatively, many rails can be converted into running on ‘dual fuel’ by installing a summer heating element – therefore eliminating the need to turn on your central heating and save money. In terms of underfloor heating, there are two types you can get: dry and wet. Dry underfloor heating uses electric wires to heat, whilst the wet system uses hot water pipes as part of your central heating.

Installation and Running Costs

The only downfall with underfloor heating is the inconvenience it causes whilst being installed and the initial installation cost which can be large. However once installed, the running costs are surprisingly low, as it has been estimated that the average underfloor bathroom heating system uses around the same amount of energy as three 100w light bulbs.

When To Install

Now! Don’t leave getting your heating fixed or installed until the middle of winter, as it means you will feel the chill much more than you would if you’d only done it earlier…
