Linoleum floor covering is often dismissed as old-fashioned and yet it is a very green alternative in the bottom because it is made almost completely from natural ingredients and natural pigments. It has many advantages, is very easy to clean, it’s warmer than stone and ceramic tile. Modern linoleum floor covering is available in a fantastic range of colours and designs. It has come a long way from the outdated floor covering of the 50s and 60s. The only disadvantage is that it must be laid on a completely flat floor because it will tear, if there are any uneven bits.

 

Bathroom flooring is not an area on the bathroom that you should economize on because choosing the cheapest option could be expensive in the long run. Bathrooms are subjected to a fair amount of wear and tear, they have steam and can have lots of splashes and if you have the wrong type of floor covering it can warp or rot. Carpet is not the best choice for a damp environment. Fortunately, there are many types of flooring that are durable and you can do a lot to prevent damage to bathroom flooring. Drying the floors after showering means that the water does not have time to damage the floor.

Rubber flooring

There are many advantages to rubber flooring, it is comfortable underfoot easy to clean and hardwearing. It tends to complement modern bathrooms rather than the older style bathrooms. Today flooring can be purchased with patterns or raised studs which is a safety feature because the textures for the better grip. Beware choosing the flooring with a deep groove because they can encourage dirt to congregate in the cracks. Vinyl is also a durable and affordable choice of flooring for the bathroom.

Stone/Slate Flooring

The usual Stone choice for bathrooms is granite slate or limestone, they look natural and they look classy rather like Spanish or Italian bathrooms but the disadvantage of this type of flooring is that ideally they are meant for a warm climate, if you can’t afford under floor heating they can strike very cold for your feet. Bathroom mats and slippers counteract this you still have to walk over cold floors. Another disadvantage is the fact that they are very porous and they need to be sealed if they are not they stain quickly.

Ceramic and porcelain tiles

These have the same advantages and disadvantages as stone, however they are stain resistant and don’t have to be sealed but they can be cold in winter

Mosaic squares

Mosaic squares are popular in North Africa and the Middle East and they can be bought from tile stores or you can make your own from pieces of tile fragments.
